History Of JFK International Airport And Its Name

JFK International was initially (in 1942) named as ‘Idlewild Airport’ replacing the ‘Idlewild Beach Golf Club.’ It was in 1948 that its name was changed to ‘New York International Airport, Anderson Field.’ However, the most popular and common name of the airport remained ‘Idlewild’ until 1963.

After that, the name of the airport finally changed to ‘JFK International’ following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy at the end of 1963. This time the name change was proposed by the then Mayor of NYC, Robert Ferdinand Wagner II.
